The Colorado Women's Caucus for Art
Bras Bangles & Bunions
The price of fashion
Proposal Objective:
To explore what we as human beings wear, not for practicality, but for fashion, and what the actual metaphorical 'price' of this fashion is/was.
Show Structure:
This proposal is a collaborative project uniting the Colorado Women's Art Caucus members with national members. The combined artistic effort will explore the concept of 'The Price of Fashion.' We will call for national participation from our national base of members and conduct a jurying process for individual art work selection. The installation project will include Colorado members only in the creation of the project as outlined below.
Artists:
We will be exploring the concept of 'The Price of Fashion'. The artist's expression of this concept may include, but is not limited to the 'price tag' of couture fashion to 'child labor' in the manufacturing of cheap clothing and exploration of fashionable body manipulation and/or mutilation, 'cosmetic surgery', 'adornment/tattoos/piercing', and historic corseting.
The initial structure outlined above is just that, the beginning. The majority of the WCA members only know of the general outline of this proposed project and have not yet developed the topics/s they will be exploring.
Feature Installation:
As part of our visual journey of fashion we propose a long pipe suspended by wire, running down the length of the gallery hung with garments that explore different forms that women have been expected to fit into by the 'fads and fashions of the times'. These will not be historic depictions but fantastic recreations of hoop skirts, bullet bras, corsets, and suits with shoulder pads. Each artist will create a garment of materials and fabric that juxtapose the inspirational piece with the emotions and experiences of the woman. For example a hoop skirt may include materials such as 'black PVC irrigation pipe' and 'hospital gauze', a 'Madonna' bullet bra with soup cans cut into shape and corsets made from clay. Futuristic wild and imaginative garments that mold our bodies into unnatural shapes would include a feeling of the surreal in the installation. Actual measurements and historic references can be shared in show tags.
Education/public access:
Before and during the art exhibit we anticipate incorporating an educational component, consisting of a round table or panel discussion with contributing artists, staff, students, fashion experts and the community.
TACtile Textile Arts Center Exhibit Proposal
The WCA works closely with the institutions and galleries where we show. We like to receive additional ideas from the communities in which we show our work. We look forward to additional dialogue with TACtile in the creation of the show 'Bras, Bangles & Bunions', after all that is part of the exploration of the show as a whole.
Juror:
We have found that in the selection and hanging of the final art created for any group show it has been helpful to have an outside juror select the work and 'propose a structure' for the hanging of our shows. If TACtile would like to perform this role or assign the outside juror the WCA would be most appreciative. Otherwise WCA will seek that juror.
To participate in any shows you must be a
current member of WCA. See ourmembership
page for more info.
